Conversations with Colombians: Nini Zubieta

Nini is home in many parts of Colombia, but she currently lives in Bogota. Here are some of her thoughts on her country…

Nini es el hogar de muchas partes de Colombia, pero actualmente vive en Bogota. Estos son algunos de sus pensamientos sobre su pais…

LCO: Which part of Colombia do you call home? ¿Qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa?
NZ: It is difficult to say which city I call home because I’m from Villavicencio and I love and miss the culture so much, but I’ve been living in Bogota and miss it a lot when I’m out. I also love and am happy in Cartagena and Santa Marta.
Es complicado decir a cual ciudad  llamo casa, ya que soy de Villavicencio  y adoro y extraño mucho su cultura, pero llevo viviendo ya 14 en  Bogota y la extraño mucho cuando estoy afuera , y me encanta soy feliz en Cartagena y Santa Marta.

LCO: What do you do for work? ¿Qué haces en el trabajo?
NZ: I’m studying graphic design and working on my graduation project this semester so I’m hoping to practice soon.
Soy Diseñadora Grafia este semestre estoy con el proyecto de grado asi que espero el momento de poder ejercer. 

LCO: In three words, what does Colombia mean to you? En tres frases, ¿qué es lo principal para usted de Colombia?
NZ: My family, the culture, folklore and plantains, hahaha.
Mi familia, la cultura, folclor, y el platano, jajaja.

LCO: What is a typical weekend like for you? ¿Cómo es un típico fin de semana para usted?
NZ: Right now, I am very tranquil, but I always love to have the opportunity to travel to Santa Marta, Cartagena and San Andres, because they are my favorites. In Santa Marta, tehre are special nights on the sea for vallenato rumbas, listening, dancing and a good time, feeling the breeze and hearing the sound of the sea. It is a stunning state and even better when you are in good company…
Ahora soy muy tranqui, pero siempre q tengo la oportunidad me encanta viajar ir a santa marta, Cartagena y San Andres ,, ya que son mis preferidos en especial Santa Marta por sus noches de  rumba vallenata en el mar, se escucha vallenato, se baila y se pasa bien, sintiendo la brisa y el sonido del mar… es un estado sensacional y mejor aun cuando se esta con una buena compañía… 

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? ¿Cambiaria alguna cosa sobre Colombia? Por que o por que no? 
NZ: There are several points to be discussed, such as education, health, economy, and politics, especially the policy which is what makes a country work …and of course the bad image we have abroad, because of some people who do wrong things… Fortunately, slowly, that image is starting to change and those who visit my country will love it.
Uuuuyy realmente creo q serian varios los puntos a tratar, como por ejemplo la Educacion,  salud,  economía y la  política…en especial la política que es  lo que hace que un país funcione… y claro la mala imagen que tenemos en el extrajero, por causa de algunos que hacen las cosas mal.. pero afortundamente poco a poco esa imagen ya esta cambiando y quien visita mi país se va amandolo. 

LCO: Favorite Colombian tradition? ¿Favorita tradición Colombiana?
NZ: Hmm, I like and enjoy a lot of folk festivals in some cities, like fairs and summer festivals in Meta, the end of the the end of the “old year” in the burning plain which is nothing more that a simple rag doll or cardboard stuffed with sawdust or paper and burned at midnight on December 31 of each year. Usually there are several types of explosives (of various sizes, moderate) which give a special touch to the ritual, to detonate them while the doll is being incinerated.

At the sound of the first fire crackers, you feel the arrival of the new year, and in the doorways of homes and within them, the relatives, friends and people in general give hugs. They want the best for the new year. After this, the family gathers at home to carry out the classic New Year’s Eve dinner and then parties in the streets until dawn. Then there is a pot on the river walk where a chicken stew with roasted meat is prepared and plenty of beer for a hang over the next morning! Hahaha, Colombia….

Mmm me gusta y disfruto mucho de las fiestas folclóricas de algunas ciudades , ejemplo: las ferias de acacias y los festivales de verano en el “Meta” los fines de año en el llano quemar los “Año viejos”.no son mas que unos simples muñecos de trapo o de cartón, rellenos de aserrín o de papel, que se queman a la medianoche del 31 de diciembre de cada año. Y que normalmente llevan varios tipos de explosivos (de distinta magnitud, moderadamente), que le dan el toque especial al ritual, al detonarse éstos mientras se está incinerando el muñeco. 

Sonados los primeros petardos, se siente la llegada del nuevo año, y en los portales de las casas y dentro de ellas, los familiares, amigos, y personas en general, se dan un abrazo, y se desean lo mejor para el año que nace, luego de esto, se reúne la familia dentro de casa, para llevar a cabo la clásica cena de fin de año, y luego la rumba en las calles hasta el amanecer y luego el paseo de olla al rio donde se prepara sancocho de gallina carne asada y mucha cerveza para el guayabo o resaca jajajaj que viva Colombia…

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian who has inspired you and why. ¿Cuéntenos sobre alguna persona de Colombia quien lo haya inspirado y por qué?
NZ: My parents and my grandparents were very enterprising people who made ​​a point that without greater study we can not overcome the problems we face and the obstacles in the way. They had  respect for education.
Mis viejos, mis abuelos gente muy emprendedora, hechada palante que sin mayor grado de estudio, salieron adelante, mostrándonos que no nos podemos dejar vencer por los problemas obstáculos que se nos presentan en el camino, y el respeto la educación y sencillez para las personas que nos rodean. 

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Alguna gente está mirando a Colombia como destino para viajar. ¿Qué les aconsejaría? 
NZ: Colombia arguably has nothing to envy the other countries which I have already know in South America. Every city in every corner of Colombia shows much warmth, a lot of heart, always… Foreigners do not just come and go; many see in Colombia a chance for new life … Why stay? The answer is very simple: people. All visitors to any city in the country are amazed at the warmth and friendliness of all people. Whenever you need something, you will find it that, with a smile, Colombians are willing to help at any time.
Colombia indiscutiblemente no tiene nada k envidiarle a otros países los cuales ya he conocido como sur america, cada ciudad cada rinconcito de colombia tiene mucho que mostrar, mucho calor humano mucho corazón, siempre …Los extranjeros no solo van y vienen, hay muchos que se quedan, muchos que ven en Colombia una oportunidad para una nueva vida… ¿Por qué se quedan? La respuesta es muy simple: la gente. Todas las personas que visitan cualquier ciudad del país se quedan maravilladas con la calidez y la amabilidad de todas las personas. Siempre que necesites algo vas a encontrar colombianos que con una sonrisa están dispuestos a ayudarte en cualquier momento. 

LCO: If you were to move to another country, which food would you miss the most? ¿Si usted se mudara para otro país, que comida crees que más extrañaría?
NZ: Uuuuy, without doubt the plantains and lots of fruit and good coffee I have in my life.
Uuuuy sin dudar el Platano y muchas frutas y el buen café jajaja ya lo he vivido. 

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
NZ: Colombia still has many problems, such as groups outside the law, but it is not as shown on TV. I have not met any foreigners who are not happy in love with my country. When you as a traveller if they are afraid to be in Colombia, most likely they will say no, because they feel at home and stick to the areas that are recommended to visit. Foreigners do not travel into the jungle unless they have other intentions…
Colombia aun que hemos tenido muchos problemas, ejemplo, grupos al margen de la ley,, no es como lo muestran en la tele, no he conocido ningún extranjero k no salga encantado enamorado con mi país,, Cuando le preguntas a un extranjero si le da miedo estar en Colombia, lo más probable es que te diga que no, pues ya conocen como es el país y las áreas que son recomendables para visitar. Los extranjeros no viajan a la selva a menos de que tengan otro tipo de intenciones…

Conversations with Colombians: Jose Valentin Restrepo

Jose is home in Medellin. Here are his thoughts on Colombia and some recommendations for his city.

José se casa en Medellín. He aquí sus reflexiones sobre Colombia y algunas recomendaciones para su ciudad.

LCO: Which part of Colombia do you call home? How long have you lived there? ¿Qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa?  ¿Cuánto tiempo has estado viviendo allí?
JVR: Medellin is that place I call home. It’s the one I care the most. I have lived here all my life except for a few short intervals.
A mi casa la llamo Medellin, porque es por el lugar que mas me preocupo. He vivido acá toda mi vida con intervalos cortos en otras partes.

LCO: What do you do for work? ¿Qué haces en el trabajo?
JVR: I’m a professor, part time and associate. I also give advice in technology to some companies and different people. Finally, I’m and iApp developer.
Soy profesor, medio tiempo y por cátedra. Ademas asesoro a diferentes personas y compañías en temas de tecnología. Soy finalmente desarrollar de iApps.

LCO: Tell us about one of your favourite celebrations in Colombia. Cuéntanos acerca de una de sus celebraciones favoritas en Colombia.
JVR: My favorite celebrations are with my family. We meet some place like my parents’ house or any other house outside the city. There we eat and enjoy music. About popular celebrations, I enjoy concerts in open places.
Mis celebraciones favoritas son con la familia. Nos reunimos en algún lugar como la casa de mis padres o alguna casa campestre y comemos y disfrutamos de la música.A nivel de celebraciones populares me encantan los conciertos al aire libre.

LCO: What is your favorite way to spend your free time in Colombia? ¿Cuál es tu manera favorita de pasar tu tiempo libre en Colombia?
JVR: Going outside of the city. Sometimes a museum. Most of the time doing some sport or talking to my friends in a bar or coffee shop.
Salir de la ciudad al campo. A veces un museo. La mayoría del tiempo practicando un deporte o conversando con mis amigos en un bar o cafe. 

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Alguna gente está mirando a Colombia como destino para viajar. ¿Qué les aconsejaría? 
JVR: Go to the natural parks. There, you will always find something interesting. Also downtown, even-though sometimes they could be risky (thieves), they are magical places.
Vayan a los lugares campestres como parques. Allá siempre encontraran algo interesante. también el centro de las ciudades, aunque a veces puede ser peligroso por robos son lugares mágicos. 

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? ¿Cambiaria alguna cosa sobre Colombia? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
JVR: More education for the population. I know that with education, many of the problems of our society could be solved.
Mas educación para las personas. Yo se que con mas educación muchos de los problemas pueden ser resueltos. 

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian who has inspired you and why. ¿Cuéntenos sobre alguna persona de Colombia quien lo haya inspirado y por qué?
JVR: Rodolfo Llinas. Neuroscientist. He is very critical on the education models we have to follow.
Rodolfo Llinas. Neurocientífico. Se muestra muy crítico sobre los modelos de enseñanza que tenemos que seguir. 

LCO: What are your thoughts on Colombian cuisine? ¿Cuáles son sus pensamientos sobre la comida colombiana?
JVR: In the mountains it can be very greasy since there are some recipes based on pork. At the coast line it’s much better and healthier.
En las montañas puede ser un poco grasosa porque hay muchas recetas basadas en el cerdo. En las costas son mucho mejor y mas saludables.

LCO: Give us some recommendations from your home town or nearest city – some of your favorite places (restaurants, clubs, etc) to spend your free time. Nos dan algunas recomendaciones de su ciudad -algunos de sus lugares favoritos para pasar su tiempo libre.
JVR: Downtown (a crazy place)
Lleras Park (clubs and bars)
Plaza Mayor and Bear Foot Park (Parque de los Piez Descalsos)
Cerro Nutibara (inside medellin park)
Llano Grande, El Pañol, Santa fe de Antioquia (nearby towns)
Coffee region (Armenia, Pereira and Manizales – especially Salento).

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
JVR: Enjoy the people and nature. Most people here are very warm and helpful. Enjoy the sightseeing. There are so many different kinds of environments and climates.
Disfruten de la gente y la naturaleza. La gente es muy cordial y colaboradora. Disfruten los paisajes. Hay muchos ambientes y climas variados.

Conversations with Colombians: Carolina Munévar Pérez

Carolina is originally from Duitama, in the Boyacá department.
She is currently studying abroad in London.

Carolina es originario de Duitama, en el departamento de Boyacá.
Actualmente está estudiando en el extranjero en Londres.

LCO: Where is home to you? If not the place where you grew up why did you leave? Dónde está tu hogar? Si no es un lugar, dónde creciste o viveste?
CMP: Home is where you belong. It could be many places depending about different situation in your life. Now my home is London because I’m studying and living here; during my university, Bogotá was my home. But my true home is where my Mum is, where I grew up in Duitama – Boyacá – Colombia.
Casa es el lugar donde perteneces, pero este varía dependiendo de situaciones en la vida, (now my home is Londres, porque estudio y vivo ahi). Pero my gran casa es donde esta mi mamá, donde yo crecí en Duitama (Boy) Colombia

LCO: How do you earn a living? Cómo te ganas la vida?
CMP: As a foreigner, I’m only allowed to work 20 hours per week so I have a part time job. I also have another job babysitting for pocket money. With those I’m earning enough money to survive!
Siendo estudiante internacional, tengo la oportunidad de trabajar 20 horas a la semana, pero también trabajo como niñera lo me da dinero extra. Con estos trabajos gano lo suficiente para sobrevivir.

LCO: In three sentences, what does Colombia mean to you? En tres oraciones, qué significa Colombia para ti?
CMP: Colombia is a huge country with a variety of food and tropical fruits. It has different levels of temperature along the country and a big natural environment. COLOMBIA TE QUIERO!! XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Colombia es un gran país con una variedad de comida y frutas tropicales. Tiene todas las temperaturas y una inmensa riqueza natural. Es un país donde todo esta por hacer y dónde hay que invertir para transformar el futuro de los que estan y los que vienen.

LCO: Travelers are visiting Colombia more often now. What advice do you have for them? Actualmente hay un incremento de turistas a Colombia. Qué les recomienda?
CMP: Always have a couple of contacts there like telephone numbers, address… Get vaccinated, get good travel insurance. Distribute your money in different parts of your luggage or clothes just in case if some one steals something. Get maps, never travel alone, usually people are very friendly and helpful, but sometimes people beg for money so if you need help you should let them know if they give you directions you will give them a little tip or something. There are so many things that are very cheap, like clothes, cigarettes, beer, food, so try, try and try especially all traditional dishes like ajiaco, mondongo, arepas, juices… Do not forget sun protection and insect repellent.  Enjoy!
Siempre tenga al alcance teléfonos y direciones de contactos en Colombia. Vacunarse y compra un buen seguro de viajes es indispensable.  Cuando viaje distribuye el dinero en diferentes partes del equipaje e incluso en la ropa, esto es una precausion solo si alguien llega a robarte. Nunca viajes sola, compra mapas y guias turisticas, estan disponibles en alcaldías, aeropuertos y librerías. La gente siempre es amigable con los extranjeros, algunos te pedirán dinero entonces puedes negociar si necesitas ayuda por ejemplo llegar aun lugar; puedes responder: “Te doy direo si me indica como llegar a…” Muchas cosas son muy baratas, ropa, cigarrillos, cerveza, comida asi que arriesgate y prueba toda clase de comida especialmente la comida típica: ajiaco, mondongo, jugos. No olvide comprar protector solar y repelente de insectos.

LCO: What’s your favorite type of Colombian meal? Cuál es su comida colombiana favorita?
CMP: I’m from the centre of the country and one of the best dishes there is ajiaco, also agua de panela and arepa boyacense are the best! But all the areas in Colombia have different traditional food and I really like the Caribbean food – arepa e huevo for breakfast y langostinos con patacones y suero costeño for lunch. Bandeja paisa at the coffee area, cuy at the south and also helado de paila… I could keep talking more about colombian gastronomy!
Yo soy del centro del país y para mi uno de los mejores platos típicos es el ajiaco, no puedo olvidar el agua de panela y las arepas boyacenses que son las mejores! Pero cada una de las regiones en Colombia tiene platos tipicos me encanta la comida costeña Arepa de huevo al desayuno, langostinos con patacones y suero costeño al almuerzo hummmm. Bandeja paisa en la zona cafetera, cuy al sur del país sin olvidar el helado de paila… yo podría decir mucho mas sobre la gastronomia Colombiana.

LCO: If you were to take a weekend trip to somewhere in Colombia, where would you go? Why? Si tuvieras un viaje de fin de semana en Colombia a dónde irías y por qué?
CMP: Weekend trip to Villa de Leyva in Boyacá, my county. It is a colonial town very tranquil just to relax, walk, ride horses and visit the areas like the dinosaur musuem and towns around. The weather is cold, perfect for a couple plan or friends if you want to go camping. It is just a few hours north of the capital city Bogotá.
Iria a Villa de Leyva en Boyacá, mi departament, esta a un par de horas hacia el norte desde Bogotá. Es un pueblito pacífico para relajarse, caminar, montar a caballo, visitar lugares al rededor como el museo del dinosaurio o pueblos cernacos. Es el plan perfecto en pareja o con amigos si quieres acampar.

LCO: What is your favorite way to spend your free time? Qué haces en tu tiempo libre?
CMP: I am a student so I’m spending my time researching for my assignments, reading the news on the internet and doing pilates and yoga.
Busco información relacionada con lo que estoy estudiando, leo las noticias generalmente en internet y hago algo de ejercicio como pilates y yoga.

LCO: What is your earliest memory? Cuál es su recuerdo?
CMP: About Colombia, merengón de Feijoa. About England, people are friendly and the transport system in London.
Recuerdo de Colombia, merengón de Feijoa. De Inglaterra, la amabilidad de su gente.

LCO: What does success mean to you? Qué es ser exitoso?
CMP: Doing everything that you really enjoy and feel happy doing. This way you you will have satisfaction in everything you do.
Es hacer lo que uno realmente disfruta hacer, la compensación es más satisfactoria en todos los sentidos.

LCO: If you could give the rest of the world a message about your country, what would you say? Si pudiera dar un mensaje al resto del mundo sobre su país, qué diria?
CMP: Just go there and travel around the country.
Colombia, donde todo esta por hacer, visitelo.

Conversations with Colombians: Luis Fernando Gonzalez Cortes

Luis lives in Bogota but loves his the town he calls home, San Gil. Here are his thoughts on Colombia and why he wouldn’t change anything. 

Luis vive en Bogotá, pero ama a su pueblo que él llama su casa, San Gil. He aquí susreflexiones sobre Colombia y por qué no iba a cambiar nada.

LCO: Which part of Colombia do you call home? How long have you lived there? ¿Qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa? ¿Cuánto tiempo has estado viviendo allí?
LFGC: All of Colombia is my home. I am from Santander, and living in Bogota. But I love my beautiful land, San Gil. I have really lived very little time in San Gil, but every time I go to my hometown, I appreciate it more.
Todo Colombia es mi casa aunque, soy Santandereano residente en Bogotá pero, amante de mi tierra hermosa San Gil. Realmente en San Gil es muy poco lo que he vivido pero, cada ocasión que tengo para ir a mi ciudad natal la aprovecho al máximo. 

LCO: What do you do for work? ¿Qué haces en el trabajo?
LFGC: I am an administrative boss of a shopping center.
Soy jefe administrativo comercial.

LCO: In three sentences, what does Colombia mean to you? En tres frases, ¿qué es lo principal para usted de Colombia?
LFGC:
1. The warmth of the people.
2.  The variety of climates and places to discover.
3. The food in all the places I know is super delicious and varied.
1. La calidez de la gente. 
2. La variedad de climas y de lugares por descubrir.
3. La comida que en todos los lugares que conozco es deliciosa y super variada.

LCO: What is a typical weekend like for you? ¿Cómo es un típico fin de semana para usted?
LFGC: On Saturday, I work until 4 and then go to my house or my friends, to the shopping center or simply relax. On Sunday I have many options, visits, walking with my friends in CS, planning lunch or just travel to a town near Bogota. When there is a long weekend or holiday, I take the opportunity to travel and meet other people. Otherwise as mentioned above, to go to my roots … SAN GIL.
El Sabado lo trabajo hasta las 4 de la trde y luego voy a mi casa o la de mis amigos, a un centro comercial o sencillamente a descansar. El Domingo tengo muchas opciones, salidas a caminar con mis amigos de CS, plan de almuerzos o sencillamente salir a un pueblito cercado de Bogotá. Cuando es fin de semana festivo o feriado, lo aprovecho para viajar y conocer o en su defecto como mencione anteriormente para ir a mis raices… SAN GIL. 

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? ¿Cambiaria alguna cosa sobre Colombia? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
LFGC: No. Simply because I have everything here, I’m happy and there are a thousand and one reasons to be proud of being Colombian.
No. Sencillamente aca lo tengo todo, soy feliz y existen mil y un motivos para estar orgulloso de ser COLOMBIANO. 

LCO: Favorite Colombian tradition? ¿Favorita tradición Colombiana?
LFGC: If you pass by San Gil, is a hall for music (genre) that shows how beautiful is my land.
Si pasas por San Gil, es un pasillo (genero musical) que enmarca lo hermosa que es mi tierra. 

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian who has inspired you and why. ¿Cuéntenos sobre alguna persona de Colombia quien lo haya inspirado y por qué?
LFGC: Well, there are many, but I strongly identify with some athletes who, in their time, left their mark on our lives: Carlos Alberto “El Pibe” Valderrama, Santiago Botero, Willinton “Old Willi” Ortiz and a band that is little known but plays some really cool rock – Khronos. I believe that many Colombians have risen thanks to their commitment, strength and desire to move forward and promote the good name of Colombia in the world.
Bueno son muchos pero, me siento muy identificado con algunos deportistas que en su tiempo dejaron huella en nuestra vida, Carlos Alberto “el pibe” Valderrma, Santiago Botero, Willinton “el viejo Willi” Ortiz y también una banda musical poco conocida pero muy buena unos rockeros super cheveres, KHRONOS. Considero que como muchos Colombianos han surgido gracias a su empeño, su garra, sus ganas de salir adelante y de dejar el buen nombre de Colombia en el mundo. 

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Alguna gente está mirando a Colombia como destino para viajar. ¿Qué les aconsejaría? 
LFGC: Simple. Take advantage of this beautiful opportunity to know the best country in the world.
Sencillo, que aprovechen esa oportunidad tan linda que tienen de conocer a el mejor pais del mundo.

LCO: If you were to move away from Colombia, which food would you miss the most? ¿Si usted se mudara para otro país, que comida crees que más extrañaría?
LFGC: The food from my home. I’m from a town where you eat very Of my house, I’m from a town where we eat very well and the food culture is huge.
La de mi casa, soy de un pueblo en el cual se come muy pero muy casero y la cultura gastronomica es enorme. 

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
LFGC: We are the only country in South America with two seas, rich in indigenous culture and growing in the socio-cultural area. We have a wide variety in weather just minutes away. We are friendly people that we will always keep the doors of our house open to any local or foreigner visiting us, which means no doubt we will make many friends who find it a safe place, fall in love with the country and want to live here.
Somos el unico pais de suramerica con dos mares, ricos en cultura indigena y creciendo en el area socio cultural, con gran variedad dde climas a tan solo minutos de trayecto, somos gente amable, colabordora, que siempre vamos a tener las puertas de nuestras casa abiertas para cualquier local o extrangero que nos visite, que sin lugar a dudas y como muchos amigos que vienen de paseo seguro, se enamoraran de mi pais y querran vivir en el.

Raúl es de Bogotá, donde gran parte de su vida gira en torno al fútbol. Estos son sus pensamientos sobre la vida en Colombia.

LCO: Which part of Colombia do you call home? How long have you lived there? ¿Qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa?  ¿Cuánto tiempo has estado viviendo allí?
RFR: My home is Bogota. I’ve been living here all my life (25 years).
Mi hogar es Bogotá, he vivido acá toda mi vida (25 años).

LCO: What do you do for work? ¿Qué haces en el trabajo?
RFR: I organize soccer tournaments and I’m also a soccer trainer.
Organizo torneos de fútbol y soy entrenador de fútbol.

LCO: What is your big dream? ¿Cuál es tu gran sueño?
RFR: I wouldn’t call it a dream, but it’s a very important goal: go to the World Cup in Brazil 2014.
No lo llamaría un sueño, sino un objetivo muy importante: ir al mundial de Brasil 2014.

LCO: Give us three tips about visiting your home town, Bogota. Danos tres consejos acerca de visitar su ciudad natal, Bogotá.
RFR: 1. If the path is available, go to Monserrate walking or jogging. You can return in the Teleférico.
2. In transmilenio, paying one ticket you can go around most of the city (better not in rush hours).
3. There are several museums, some with special discounts or free some days of the week.
1. Si hay paso, vayan a Monserrate a pie, pueden regresar en teleférico.
2. En transmilenio pagando un solo tiquete se puede conocer la mayor parte de la ciudad (mejor no hacerlo en horas pico).
3. Hay muchos museos, algunos de los cuales tienen descuentos especiales o son gratis algunos días de la semana.

LCO: What is your favorite way to spend your free time in Colombia? ¿Cuál es tu manera favorita de pasar tu tiempo libre en Colombia?
RFR: Attending as many carnivals or festivals in the different towns and cities of the country.
Yendo a la mayor cantidad posible de carnavales, festivales, ferias y fiestas de los distintos municipios del país.

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Alguna gente está mirando a Colombia como destino para viajar. ¿Qué les aconsejaría?
RFR: There are great places all over Colombia, so don’t spend too much time in the big cities. It’s important to plan your trip, but don’t do it in a way that wouldn’t allow you to make a change of plans, because it’s very possible that you like very much a specific place and you want to stay more time in it. The best places to spend the nights are not hotels or hostels. It’s the houses of people from the towns you visit. It’s not easy to contact them, but it’s worth the effort. You’ll get to know the culture and customs from the place better, and you’ll surely meet kind, interesting and funny people. The problem is that the language might be a barrier, because most of them only speak Spanish. Most of cities and towns celebrate festivals or carnivals in one weekend, so in any time of the year you can have the oportunity to attend one of them. If you like to party you can’t leave without going to one of these celebrations.
Hay sitios exelentes alrededor de toda Colombia, así que no pasen mucho tiempo en las grandes ciudades.  Es importante que planeen el paseo, pero que no sea camisa de fuerza, ya que ees muy posible que les guste mucho un lugar en específico y quieran permanecer allí más tiempo del planeado.  Los mejores sitios para alojarse no son hoteles u hostales, son las casas de las personas que viven en el sitio a donde van.  No es fácil conseguir el contacto de alguno de ellos, pero vale la pena el esfuerzo, ya que podrán conocer mejor la cultura y las costumbres del lugar y además conocerán personas amables, interesantes y chistosas.  El problema es que el lenguaje puede ser una barrera, porque la mayoría de ellos solamente habla español.  La mayoría de pueblos y ciudades celebran festivales, carnavales o ferias y fiestas durante un fin de semana, así que en cualquier época del año tendrá la oportunidad de asistir a uno.  Si les gustan las fiestas no pueden irse sin ir a una de estas celebraciones.

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? ¿Cambiaria alguna cosa sobre Colombia? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
RFR: No. I wouldn’t. I’m aware we have several problems in Colombia, but their existence has been necesary to form the type of people that we have in Colombia. That is the most precious aspect of the country.
No lo haría, estoy conciente que tenemos varios problemas en Colombia, pero su existencia ha sido necesaria para formar el tipo de personas que tenemos en Colombia, que es el aspecto más preciado del país.

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian who has inspired you and why. ¿Cuéntenos sobre alguna persona de Colombia quien lo haya inspirado y por qué?
RFR: Jaime Garzón, a humorist who was murdered more than 10 years ago. In his programs he made criticisms in a smart and funny way to the people in the government that deserved it. Several things he said a long time ago happened finally. He understood the reality of Colombia and said what was wrong in the country, knowing the risk that he was taking. If we could have more people like him, who loved the country above everything, we will surely have an even better place to live.
Jaime Garzón, un humorista que fue asesinado hace más de 10 años.  En sus programas criticaba de manera inteligente y chistosa a la spersonas del gobierno que lo merecían.  Muchas de las cosas que dijo finalmente sucedieron.  Él entendió la realidad de COlombia y dijo lo que estaba mal en el país, conociendo el riesgo que tomaba.  SI existieran más persons como él, que amaran al país por encima de todo, seguramente tendríamos un sitio aún mejor para vivir.

LCO: What are your thoughts on Colombian cuisine? ¿Cuáles son sus pensamientos sobre la comida colombiana?
RFR: It’s wonderful, and the most fantastic thing is that every region has different dishes, so you’ll always eat different things when you travel.
Es maravillosa, lo mejor de todo es que cada región tiene diferentes platos, así que siempre comerán cosas diferentes cuando viajen.

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
RFR: I’ll tell them that the only way to know Colombia is coming and visiting. The best of Colombia is a feeling of joy that is impossible to describe or to see in pictures. You get it as soon as you are here.
Les diría que la única forme de conocer Colombia es viniendo a visitar.  Lo mejor de Colombia es un sentimiento de alegría que es imposible de describir o de ver en fotos, y que se tiene apenas se llega al país.

Conversations with Colombians: Catalina Navia

Catalina is a designer and creative director who lives in Bogota. She shares photos some of her products below.

Catalina es un diseñador y director creativo que vive en Bogotá. Ella compartealgunas fotos de sus productos por debajo

LCO: Which part of Colombia do you call home? How long have you lived there? ¿Qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa?  ¿Cuánto tiempo has estado viviendo allí?
CN: Bogota is my home, it’s a very big city. We call it the asphalt jungle because the city is actually surrounded by a jungle. I love this jungle surrounded by mountains, the sky in Bogotá is unique, deep blue and the sunsets are great! On the other hand, Bogotá offers everything that you could possibly want from an architectural point of view: old and modern, fashion, design, music and art. Everything is about freedom. For example, people in Colombia are passionate, they love to dance, there is always festivity in the air, music in their bones, generosity is in their hearts and as a result you can always find bright colours in the clothes that people wear. People are not scared to dance, they are not scared to wear colours, they have the freedom to express themselves. There is a certain type of freedom which you do not always find in other big cities where everyone plays it safe and wears only black or grey.

The weather is perfect for me. I like it when it’s a little cold… about 12, it’s cool but not sticky. Basically I am lucky I don’t melt away like an ice cream in tropical heat when I am at work. I’ve lived in Bogotá all my life. I lived abroad also for  some time but I always come back to “My Bogotá”.

Bogotá es mi casa, es una ciudad grande. La llamamos la jungla de cemento porque a sus alrededores encuentras montañas con árboles y un poco más alejado, la selva. El cielo de Bogotá es único, azul profundo y los atardeceres son increíbles. De otra mano, Bogotá ofrece todo desde el punto de vista arquitectónico, antigua, colonial y moderna; ofrece diseño, moda, música y arte. Esta es una región que habla de la libertad, por ejemplo, la gente en Colombia es apasionada, aman bailar, siempre hay festividad en el aire, música en los huesos, generosidad en los corazones, resultado de esto, es que encontrarás colores en el vestuario de su gente, la gente se expresa libremente. Existe un tipo de libertad que no encuentras fácilmente en otras ciudades grandes donde la gente va por lo seguro y se viste de negro y gris.

El clima de Bogotá es perfecto para mi, me gusta cuando esta un poco frío.. cerca de los 12 grados centígrados, es fresco, no pegajoso. Soy muy afortunada en no derretirme como un helado en el calor tropical cuando debo trabajar. He vivido toda mi vida en Bogotá, algunos meses fuera pero siempre regreso a “Mi Bogotá”.

LCO: Tell us a bit about your work as a designer and creative director. Cuéntanos un poco sobre tu trabajo de diseñadores y directora creativa.
CN: I grew up surrounded by shoes. By the age of 10, I developed a keen interest in shoes. It all began when my grandfather would hand make sandals and go door-knocking to sell his merchandise. Once my gradfather had established a good clientele, he then decided to create a proper shoe manufacturing company in the 30s. My father and uncle both became shoe designers and taught me everything that they knew. I studied Industrial Design and started my own brand in 2008. I designed my first shoe when I was 14 years old. my father took the drawing to the factory and produced it. Of course the name of this shoe model was “Catalina”.

Unfortately the family business shut down in the 90s. I tried to work in different fields, but my heart was never really into it as my real passion was designing shoes and leather goods. I did an internship in fashion research and did so well that I was then asked to manage the Fashion Concept Workshop for the National Association of the Leather Industry for the next 8 years! I have since worked with over 400 fashion stores and leather shoe companies in Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

At the moment, my goal is to enter the international market by selling shoes online. But it’s not about just selling any old type of shoe, it’s about selling tailor made shoes. I am developing a brand of shoes that will be hand made to specifically fit your feet perfectly. I will be launching the web site www.madeofcolombia.com, where you can ask me to make the shoes of your dreams or where you can also just buy some of my exotic Colombian designs. Naturally, you will also be able to discover a bit about my country and culture on my website.

Crecí rodeada de zapatos, cuando tenía 10 años descubrí un interés particular por el calzado pues mi familia estaba en el negocio industrial del calzado. My abuelo inició su carrera haciendo sandalias a mano y vendiéndolas puerta a puerta, luego ya establecido de manera mas formal, abre la fábrica en los años 30. Mi padre y tios también trabajaban en la industria y todo lo que sé hoy en día se lo debo a todo su conocimiento. Estudié Diseño Industrial y comencé mi propia marca en el 2008. Diseñé mi primer zapato a la edad de 14 años, mi padre llevó este dibujo a la fábrica y lo produjo. Obviamente el nombre de este modelo fue “Catalina”.

Desafortunadamente el negocio familiar cerró en los años 90. Yo traté de trabajar en diferentes áreas del diseño pero mi corazón ya estaba enfocado al arte de la zapatería. Hice una pasantía en Investigación de Moda y lo hice tan bien que me llamaron a ser la Directora del Taller Conceptos de Moda  para la Asociación Colombiana de Industriales del Cuero, Calzado y Marroquinería por los siguientes 8 años. Desde entonces he trabajado con los más de 400 fabricantes de calzado y manufacturas de cuero en Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela y Nicaragua.

En este momento mi meta es entrar al mercado internacional a través de la venta online de productos, pero no es solamente vender modelos antiguos de calzado, es sobre calzado a la medida. Estoy desarrollando una marca de calzado que será hecho a mano para que se adapte al pie. Estaré lanzando el portal www.madeofcolombia.com próximamente y ahí podrás ordenar tus zapatos de tus sueños o simplemente adquirir alguno de los exóticos diseños colombianos a tu medida. También podrás descubrir un poco a mi país y mi cultura.

LCO: In three sentences, what does Colombia mean to you? En tres frases, que significa Colombia para ti?
CN: For me, Colombia means freedom and happiness. What defines Colombia is also its nature and culture. There is a melting pot of different cultures (for example, there are indigenous tribes as well as a very nice urban culture). Colombia to me is like a big warm hug on a cold cloudy day. It’s a country which radiates warmth, happiness and generosity.
Para mí, Colombia significa libertad y felicidad. Lo que define a Colombia es también la naturaleza y la cultura, encuentras mezclas interesantes todo el tiempo. Tribus indígenas y tribus urbanas en el mismo lugar. Para mí Colombia es como un abrazo tibio en un día nublado. Es un país que irradia calidez, felicidad y generosidad.

LCO: Give us some suggestions for the best shopping in your city. Danos algunas sugerencias para irse de compras en tu ciudad.
CN: Shop in the small designer boutiques; it’s not that expensive and you can find some really good stuff. Also you can be sure that you won’t cross someone else in the street wearing the exact same T-shirt as you, unlike when you buy something from a chain store that mass produces everything. Plus small Colombian designers usually try to integrate typical images that come from our cultural heritage that all us Colombians can identify with.

For men who wear suits, I suggest that you go to the Zona Rosa at this little shop called Lina Cantillo where they make very smart clothes for men. Also there is a really cool T-shirt shop nearby called Brinca Brinca. They also make really awesome baby clothes.

And of course there is my shop, Candela Design Store located in the historical area of La Candelaria. We stock many different designer labels so you can find anything from jewellery and hand crafted belts, to bikinis, colourful clothes, and beautifully hand made leather shoes…the list is endless! www.catanavia.net Also in the new area around Chapinero, you can also find a few new designer stores such as Juan, Cyclus, La Ropería and Kaftan.

Vete de compras a las pequeñas boutiques de los diseñadores, no es tan costoso y puedes encontrar cosas verdaderamente interesantes. Estarás seguro de salir a la calle y no encontrarte con personas utilizando la misma ropa.  Además todas las propuestas de diseño colombianas siempre tendrán alguna inspiración en la identidad o en la herencia cultural que nos identifica.

Para hombres que utilizan vestidos formales, sugiero en La Zona Rosa la tienda de la diseñadora Lina Cantillo donde encontrarás muchas opciones interesantes. También en la misma zona esta Brinca Brinca, camisetas divertidas e incluso ropa para bebé.

También esta por supuesto mi tienda, Candela Diseño Capital, localizada en el centro histórico de Bogotá. En ella encontrarás diferentes marcas de jóvenes diseñadores desde joyería, cinturones, bikinis, vestuario y mis bonitos zapatos hechos a mano www.catanavia.net, También encontrarás en la zona de Chapinero tiendas interesantes como Cyclus, Juan, La Ropería y Kaftan.

LCO: What is a typical weekend like for you? Cómo es un típico fin de semana para ti?
CN: There’s nothing typical in Colombia. It depends on the mood, the weather, how the day unfolds. But sometimes I like walking around the historical area of Bogotá, La Candelaria, going to a museum. My favorite is the Gold Museum. In Colombia, you can find the time for everything, so my weekend is about family and friends, partying and sightseeing. Once a month I like going to the popular market to buy groceries, Paloquemao. It’s not only for Shopping but looking for inspiration. Fruit, vegetables and flowers in Colombia are beautiful to look at, colourful, tasty and exotic.
En Colombia no hay nada típico, depende del humor, el clima, el cómo el día se desenvuelve. Pero algunas veces me gusta caminar por la zona histórica de Bogotá: La Candelaria, ir a un museo, mi favorito es el Museo Del Oro. En Colombia puedes encontrar tiempo para todo, por esto, mi fin de semana lo divido entre familia, amigos, fiesta y caminatas. Una vez al mes me gusta ir al mercado popular Paloquemao, donde no solo compro víveres pero también me inspiro. Las frutas, los vegetales y las flores en Colombia son hermosas, coloridas, sabrosas y exóticas.

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Muchas personas están mirando a Colombia como destino de viaje. Que consejo les das a los turistas?
CN: Take your time to meet people. Talk to us you and you will be suprised how nice Colombians are. Take a few days to let everything sink in in Bogotá, then you can go to the nice and exotic natural places we have to offer. For example, I have made some great friends through my shop. I met some Australian travellers who started talking to me about my T-shirts. Now we see each other every year and we go on holidays together!

You must take it easy in Colombia. “Colombian time” is not as bad as “island time”, but we do operate at a slower pace than what you are used to. So if you are stressed out about being late, don’t worry, just relax, it will be fine.

Don’t be scared. There is a very big misconception about Colombia that it is a really unsafe place. Tourists are usually really scared when they get here because they don’t know what to expect, or because they think of Colombia from 20 years ago. What you don’t realize is that half of the population in Colombia works in security. There are cops, private security  everywhere to protect you. But like in every country, there are some areas which can be a bit dangerous at night, or some things that you shouldn’t do, like talk on your Blackberry in public. Different coutry = different rules. My best advice is to ask a local (maybe the concierge) what you can and can’t do when you get there, but don’t let it stress you out. You should not be stressed out or paranoid when you are in Bogota, there is no reason to warrant such behavior.

If you are looking for a place to party, Colombia is the place to go. We have carnivals, salsa parties, underground nightclubs… But I must warn you, whether you like it or not, bring your dancing shoes because everyone dances in Colombia, and you will to. Dancing to Colombians is like soccer to Brasilians. If you love nature, you are in for a mega treat, you must go trekking through the different natural parks. La Ciudad Perdida or Tayrona National Park just to name a few are amazing. We have lots of birds and a huge biodiversity. You will be able to see colourful parrots, monkeys, tapirs, blue butterflies, turquoise lizards, pink dolphins depending on where you go.

Tómense su tiempo para conocer gente, una conversación espontánea puede llevarte a crear una amistad. Primero tómate unos días en Bogota donde todo converge, cultura, fiesta, historia, luego puedes ir a los hermosos y exóticos parajes naturales que tenemos para ofrecer. Por ejemplo, hace algunos años conocí a unos australianos en la calle, hablamos sobre camisetas que yo tenía en mi tienda y hoy en día nos vemos una vez al año para irnos juntos de vacaciones!

No tengan miedo, existe una mala concepción de Colombia pero en realidad es un lugar como cualquier otro, hay que estar atento y siempre preguntar a un local que pueden o no hacer, País diferente = Reglas diferentes. No se estresen ni estén paranoicos con el asunto de la seguridad, simplemente estar atentos.

Si están buscando un lugar para la fiesta, Colombia definitivamente es el lugar, tenemos carnavales, fiestas salseras, clubes .. Pero debo advertirles que, quiéranlo o no, deben traer sus mejores zapatos de baile pues todos bailan en Colombia, y ustedes también lo harán. Bailar es para los colombianos como el fútbol para los brasileros. Si aman la naturaleza, están en un lugar donde existe todo tipo de paisajes, deben ir a caminar la montaña y a los diferentes Parques Nacionales Naturales. Ciudad Perdida o el Tayrona son algunos para nombrar. Tenemos una gran variedad de aves y de biodiversidad. Podrán ver loros de colores, monos, tapires, mariposas azules, lagartijas turquesa, delfines rosados y más.. sólo deben escoger un destino.

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? Qué cambiarías de Colombia? Porque o porque no?
CN: I would change the social differences in terms of life quality, the social division and the corruption which makes Colombia a country that can’t grow very quickly.

In regards to the quality of life that people have in Colombia, I would like to bridge the gap between rich and poor. The divide is too big. This social division added to corruption does not allow Colombia to progress at a fast pace. Naturally, I want to see poverty reduced in my country, which is very easy to say, but much harder to do.

Cambiaría las diferencias sociales en términos de calidad de vida, división social y corrupción que hacen que Colombia no avance tan rápido como debería.

Con respecto a la calidad de vida que la gente tiene en Colombia, quisiera que el puente que existe entre ricos y pobres fuera cada vez mas corto. La división es demasiado notoria. Las divisiones sociales sumadas a la corrupción no dejan que Colombia progrese rápidamente. Naturalmente, quisiera que la pobreza se redujera en mi país, es fácil de decir pero muy difícil de lograr.

LCO: If you were to move away from Colombia, which food would you miss the most? Si estuvieras fuera de Colombia, que comida extrañarías más?
CN: Arequipe, the god of sweets, delicate, soft and addictive. All the times I’ve been far from Colombia, I miss arequipe. I’ve tried lots of sweets like dulce de leche, but arequipe is arequipe. There’s nothing like that anywhere. It’s creamy, it contains something of our childhood, some nostalgia that comes everytime you get a spoon and dip it into this amazing type of caramel. It’s emotional. It’s like “Proust’s madeleine”, the French author who eats a typical French cake called a madeleine. He bites into it, and his entire childhood comes flooding back to him.

El Arequipe, el Dios de los dulces, delicado, suave, cremoso y adictivo. Todas las veces que he estado fuera de mi país, extraño el arequipe. He probado muchos dulces como el Dulce de Leche pero el arequipe es el arequipe. No existe nada en el mundo como el arequipe, tiene algo de nostalgia, de la infancia y cada vez que como un poco vienen a mi los recuerdos. Es un dulce emocional, como las “Magdalenas de Proust” que cada vez que comía una toda su infancia venía a él.

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian in the fashion world who deserves international recognition. Cuéntanos sobre algún colombiano en el mundo de la moda que merezca reconocimiento internacional.
CN: I like Pepa Pombo, she has developed a new type of clothing. It’s all about the material, silk ribbons that are sewn in a way that become textiles. It’s about textures and colours. Perfect knitting and a very large application on garments that are really sophisticated, neat silhouettes. I admire her work and talent and send her all my congratulations.  www.pepapombo.com

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? Si pudieras decirle al mundo algo más sobre tu país, que les dirías?
CN: Colombia is a very nice country. We have lots of social issues, but once you meet her (for me Colombia is female and comes with all the complications of being a woman: seduction, beauty and danger), you fall in love instantly. So be careful because once you get here, the only risk is never wanting to leave. It’s really easy to fall in love with her, with her people, her landscapes, her food and of course, her style!
Colombia es un país muy bonito, tenemos muchos asuntos sociales difíciles pero una vez que la conoces.. (para mí Colombia es una mujer que como toda mujer tiene las complicaciones de ser una “ella”: belleza, seducción y peligro) te enamoras inmediatamente. Ten cuidado porque una vez llegas a Colombia el único peligro es querer quedarse. Es muy fácil enamorarse de ella, de su gente, de sus paisajes, de su comida y claro, de su estilo!

Conversations with Colombians: Juan Camilo Ortega Soto

Juan calls Medellín home where he works in public relations. Here are his thoughts on Colombia.

LCO: Which part of Colombia do you call home? How long have you lived there? ¿A qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa? ¿Cuánto tiempo has estado viviendo allí?
JCOS: I called the city of Manizales home – for its people, its streets, its climate, its cuisine. In general, everything to do with this beautiful city is very good. Walking its tourist sites is exceptional. It shows the majesty of our mountains, the smell and taste of coffee and, more importantly human warmth and helpful people.

I live in Medellin, also called the City of Eternal Spring. It is a beautiful city with many things to do. Its people and everything about it is stunningly beautiful. I’ve liked here my whole life and I know the life of the city well.
Le llamaría casa a la ciudad de Manizales, pues su gente, sus calles, su clima, su gastronomía y en general todo lo que tiene que ver con esta bella ciudad es muy bueno, además sus sitios turísticos para ir de paseo son excepcionales, allí se evidencia la majestuosidad de nuestras cordilleras, el olor y sabor a café, pero lo más importante, el calor humanos y servicial de su gente.

I live in Medellin, also called the city of eternal spring, is a beautiful city with manythings to do, its people and all you have to do is a stunning beauty, I’ve lived my wholelife here, and I know well as the life of a city like this.

LCO: What do you do for work? ¿Qué haces en el trabajo?
JCOS: I work in Communications and Corporate Relations, for the population of Medellín, where I write for an official newspaper. I do public relations, lobby, present local and national departmental information. I work independently for internal communications, training and stakeholder engagement.
Soy Comunicador y Relacionista Corporativo, trabajo con una población cercana de Medellín, allí escribo para un periódico oficial, hago Relaciones Públicas, Lobby, presento un programa local con información departamental y nacional, y como independiente trabajo en Comunicaciones internas, formación y con los stakeholders de las empresas.

LCO: In three sentences, what does Colombia mean to you? En tres frases, ¿qué es lo principal para usted de Colombia?
JCOS: To know and explore the country with confidence, to enjoy the hundreds of tourist places, landscapes that change in each department and all the beauty of this vast country. Its people, their warm and communication skills, and friendly faces. Finally, I would say that the main thing I wish for Colombia would be to have no corruption in government. It would be a perfect country, but because of corruption there are other evils such as violence, poverty, more corruption and lack of economic development.
Poder conocer y recorres nuestro país con total tranquilidad, para disfrutar los cientos de paisajes turísticos, sus costumbres tan cambiantes en cada población y la belleza de todo su extenso territorio. Su gente, es absolutamente cálida, con Don de gentes, es decir, con queridura y una cara amable siempre. Por último, diría que lo principal de Colombia sería el que no hubiese corrupción en el gobierno, sería un país perfecto, porque de la corrupción se derivan otros males como la violencia, la pobreza, más corrupción y la falta de desarrollo económico del país.

 

 

LCO: What is a typical weekend like for you? ¿Cómo es un típico fin de semana para usted?
JCOS: A typical weekend would involve outings to the farm, a family breakfast, walking the roads, saying hello to all my friends along the morning walk, resting and being with the family at the cottage. At night, cooking for guests and family, having a drink or a glass of wine, talking about the current situation of the country or the problems within the family, solving small problems and enjoying each other’s company.
Un típico fin de semana sería salir de paseo a la finca, desayunar en familia, caminar por los caminos vecinales, saludar a todos los amigos en la caminata matutina, descansar y estar en familia en la casa de campo, y en las noches, cocinar para los invitados y familia, tomarnos un trago o una copa de vino, hablar de la situación actual del país o los problemas al interior de la familia, solucionar problemas pequeños y disfrutar de la familia.

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? ¿Cambiaria alguna cosa sobre Colombia? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
JCOS: Yes, several things. Most important would be the mentality of the people who have been passive about the problems we have. Many people know what is happening here and remain silent. Many people have the gene of corruption encrypted in their brains. Many people are afraid to talk, to face reality and prefer to remain silent than to be good citizens and work together without looking for a profit. We should only do good to our beautiful country. People want to be more active and to respect and comply with standards and the lives of others.
Sí, varias cosas, la más importante sería la mentalidad de la gente al ser pasiva frente a los problemas que tenemos, aquí mucha gente sabe lo que pasa y se quedan callados, mucha gente tiene el gen de la corrupción encriptado en su cerebro, a mucha gente le da miedo de hablar, encarar la realidad y prefieren callar antes que ser ciudadanos de bien y trabajar conjuntamente sin buscar un beneficio económico, sólo por hacerle el bien a nuestro lindo país, queremos más personas activas y que se respeten y respeten las normas y la vida de los demás.

LCO: Favorite Colombian tradition? ¿Favorita tradición Colombiana?
JCOS: There are many, and they are all very beautiful. The one I like most is the traditional festival of flowers in my city. Go to the village of Santa Elena to see how silleteros assemble their saddles. It is a well known tradition, full of color and folklore.
Hay muchas, y todas muy bellas, la que más me gusta es la tradicional fiesta de las flores de mi ciudad, ir hasta el corregimiento de Santa Elena para ver como los silleteros arman sus silletas es una tradición bastante conocida y llena de color y folclor.

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian who has inspired you and why. ¿Cuéntenos sobre alguna persona de Colombia quien lo haya inspirado y por qué?
JCOS: I’m always inspired the recently deceased Lady of Colombian Television, Gloria Valencia de Castaño. She was a pioneer in radio and television in Colombia. assiduous defender of the environment, the planet and animals. She was an example for thousands of people looking for alternative lifestyle television. She was an advocate for intellectual preservation. She taught us that we need to hold onto the histry of our land and not be permeated by new trends or forget our past.

But what I saw of her was as a mother, grandmother and unmistakable friend. She knew that it always pays to listen, to love and set an example of an integral family. That was our Lady of the Colombian TV, Gloria Valencia de Castaño. She was part of my inspiration to do the things I do with deep passion in my career and personal life.
Siempre me inspiró la recién fallecida Dama de la televisión colombiana, Gloria Valencia de Castaño; ella fue una de las pioneras en la radio y televisión colombiana, asidua defensora del medio ambiente, del planeta y los animales, fue un ejemplo para miles de personas que buscaban en la televisión una alternativa de vida y reconocimiento, además una promotora de la conservación intelectual del país y de la cual ahora nos pegamos unos cuantos para sostener la historia de nuestra tierra y no dejarnos permear por las nuevas tendencias y olvidar nuestro pasado.

Pero por lo que conocí de ella, era una madre, abuela y amiga inconfundible, presta siempre a escuchar, a amar y dar ejemplo de familia integral, esa era nuestra Dama de la Televisión colombiana, Gloria Valencia de Castaño. Ella fue parte de mi inspiración para hacer cosas de las que hago con profundo amor en mi carrera y vida personal.

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Alguna gente está mirando a Colombia como destino para viajar. ¿Qué les aconsejaría?
JCOS: Do so without hesitation. Seek out helpful groups and people. There are tourism enterprises that are quite serious and respectful with our visitors and customers. There is a reality of insecurity in our country, but another reality is the beautiful, good people of whom there are many more. We Colombians offer open arms to welcome and assist as needed. We have all kinds of landscapes, climates, beautiful people. Colombia has changed a lot, but still any tourist or traveler in Colombia or in any other country should take certain precautions. That makes you a good traveler and you can travel anywhere in the world or in Colombia with total satisfaction. 
Que lo hagan sin dudarlo, que busquen grupos y ayudas de personas serias, hay empresas dedicadas al turismo que son absolutamente serias y respetuosas con sus visitantes y clientes, que es una realidad es la inseguridad de nuestro país, pero otra realidad es la parte bella, la gente buena que somos muchísimos más, que los colombianos estamos con los brazos abiertos para recibirlos y ayudarles en lo que necesiten y de una manera desinteresada, que tenemos todo tipo de paisajes, climas, gente linda. Colombia ha cambiado mucho, y la idea de cualquier turista o viajero sea en Colombia o en cualquier país, es no ser tan confiados, y tener ciertas precauciones para ir de paseo, eso lo hace a uno un buen viajero y los viajes en cualquier parte del mundo o en Colombia, son de satisfacción total.

LCO: If you were to move away from Colombia, which food would you miss the most? ¿Si usted se mudara para otro país, que comida crees que más extrañaría?
JCOS: I may miss some Colombian food, the arepa more accurately. Others, I would not miss all that much because our food is already available in many parts of the world. One must try other flavors of different regions. One of my principles is that to the places you go, go with caution, do as the Romans do! We don’t have a culinary tradition well known internationally but most things you can get.
Tal vez extrañaría una parte de la comida paisa, la arepa más exactamente, de resto no extrañaría casi nada, pues la comida nuestra ya está posicionada en muchas partes del mundo y uno debe tener el paladar acostumbrado a probar otros sabores de diferentes regiones, es uno de mis principios, al lugar que fueres, con precaución, haz lo que vieres jajajaja. Además la comida colombiana ya se consigue fácilmente en cualquier lado. No tenemos una tradición gastronómica muy reconocida a nivel internacional pero algo se puede conseguir.

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
JCOS: Colombia is a beautiful country with the three oceans. We have landscapes, lush nature, different climates, delicious food and its people are unique. Colombia is more than violence, drug trafficking and corruption, which is an image that was created in our past. Everything is different now. Our beautiful country has everything people need to be happy, to make your trip a pleasure. Come to know these different climates and landscapes of dreams.
Que Colombia es un país hermoso, el de los tres océanos, que tenemos paisajes, exuberante naturaleza, climas diferentes, comida deliciosa y su gente es única. Que Colombia es más que violencia, narcotráfico  y corrupción, que es una imagen que se ganó por su pasado, peor ahora todo es diferente, que nuestro bello país tiene todo lo que necesita una persona para ser feliz, para hacer de su viaje un placer, para conocer estos diferentes climas y paisajes de ensueño.

Juan is a journalist at home in Medellín. Here he talks about Colombia and his favorite traditions.

Juan es un periodista en su casa en Medellín. Aquí se habla de Colombia y sus tradiciones favoritas.

LCO: Where in Colombia do you call home? How long have you lived there? ¿Qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa? ¿Cuánto tiempo has estado viviendo allí?
JCO: For me, home is Medellín. All my life I’ve lived in this city and learned to know and recognize every nook and corner. While this has been a complex city world-renowned for its violence and drug problems, behind the face of two million people who live in this city, in our hearts, we live with pride. We work every day trying to put aside the stigma and show the true essence of “paisa”.
Para mí, mi casa es Medellín.  Toda la vida he vivido en esta ciudad y aprendido a conocer y reconocer cada rincón y cada esquina.  Si bien ha sido una ciudad compleja y mundialmente reconocida por sus problemas de violencia y narcotráfico, detrás existe la cara de dos millones de personas que habitamos esta ciudad, que la llevamos en el corazón, que la habitamos con orgullo y por la cual trabajamos día a día tratando de dejar a un lado el estigma y mostrar la verdadera esencia del “paisa”.

LCO: What do you do for work? ¿Qué haces en el trabajo?
JCO: I’m social communicator – a journalist. I am currently working with a foundation that focuses on rural education issues.
Soy comunicador social – periodista.  Actualmente trabajo con una Fundación que se enfoca en temas de educación rural.

LCO: In three sentences, what does Colombia mean to you? En tres frases, ¿qué es lo principal para usted de Colombia?
JCO: No matter what our reality, Colombia’s always happy. That is our essence. Despite bad times, we put on a brave face.
No importa nuestra realidad, el colombiano siempre está feliz.  Esa es nuestra esencia.  Al mal tiempo buena cara.

LCO: What is a typical weekend like for you? ¿Cómo es un típico fin de semana para usted?
JCO: Family. This country has the custom and tradition that all the weekends are days off. We share them with family, especially on Sundays. In my case, we met at my grandmother’s house, we all prepare lunch in the afternoon and we talk and laugh and value our family ties. Also, Friday and Saturday is to share with a partner and friends at the movies, going out to eat or perhaps enjoying a party at night.
En familia. Los paisas tenemos la costumbre y la tradición de todos los fines de semana, que son los días de descanso, compartirlos en familia, especialmente el domingo. En mi caso, nos reunimos en casa de mi abuela, vamos todos, preparamos almuerzo, en la tarde dialogamos, nos reímos, conversamos y valoramos ese vínculo familiar. Igualmente los viernes y sábados es para compartir en pareja y con los amigos en cine, saliendo a comer o quizá disfrutando de la rumba en la noche paisa.

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? ¿Cambiaría alguna cosa sobre Colombia? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
JCO: Our essence is this: We are who we are, products of what we sow. Nothing can change. I think it’s just a matter of adapting to circumstances and creating new prototypes for development (which include all other walks of life) and all part of education. I would say that with education all things can be changed in favor of development.
Nuestra esencia es esta.  Somos lo que somos producto de lo que sembramos.  Nada se puede cambiar, pienso que es solo cuestión de adaptarnos a las circunstancias y crear nuevos prototipos de desarrollo (que abarcan todas las demás esferas sociales) y todo parte de la educación. Solo le imprimiría ese toque, con educación todos los paradigmas se pueden cambiar a favor del desarrollo del país.

LCO: Favorite Colombian tradition? ¿Favorita tradición Colombiana?
JCO: The Colombians have thousands of traditions and all vary according to the region. This country is “omen” and Catholic by nature, a devotee of the Sacred Heart (hence you can understand why the country’s image is a heart). For my region, for example, the traditions are linked to the family. We have large families, people who are entrepreneurs and farmers. They are vibrant and enterprising people who have brought development to this country.

Major customs are related to:

Food: Bandeja paisa consisting of beans, rice, ripe slices, beef, pork, sausage, egg salad, avocado, arepa, porridge and snack.

Clothing: Sandals, dark pants, long sleeve plaid shirt, poncho, hat and a satchel called a carriel.

Festivals: As in the rest of the country, Holy Week is a traditional holiday. It is very important held in Santafe de Antioquia. In addition is the Festival of Flowers with its traditional parade and the Christmas lights are the most symbolic of Colombia. 
Los colombianos tienen miles de tradiciones y todas dependen según la región en la que se esté, este país es “agüerista” y católico por naturaleza, devoto del Corazón de Jesús (de ahí se puede entender porque la imagen del país es un corazón). Para mi región por ejemplo, la tradición está ligada a la familia, son familias numerosas, emprendedoras y campesinas.  Son la gente pujante y emprendedora que trajo parte del desarrollo a este país.

Las principales costumbres están relacionadas con:

Alimentación: Bandeja paisa compuesta de: frijoles, arroz, tajadas de maduro, carne molida, chicharrón, chorizo, huevo, ensalada, aguacate, arepa, mazamorra y bocadillo.

Vestuario: alpargatas, pantalón oscuro, camisa manga larga a cuadros, poncho, sombrero y carriel.

Fiestas: Al igual que en el resto del país, la semana santa es una de las fiestas tradicionales, en Antioquia es muy importante la celebrada en Santafe de Antioquia. A eso se suma la Feria de las Flores con su emblemático desfile de silleteros y el alumbrado navideño que es de los más simbólicos de Colombia.

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian who has inspired you and why. ¿Cuéntenos sobre alguna persona de Colombia quien lo haya inspirado y por qué?
JCO: William Ospina, a Colombian writer who has a very interesting series of positions in respect to the reality of Colombia. He has that touch of not only being able to identify problems, but also to give details that can lead to a solution. Besides his writings have a really wonderful, entertaining and compelling take on history. 
William Ospina, es un escritor colombiano y tiene una serie de posiciones muy interesantes respecto de la realidad colombiana.  Tiene ese toque de no solo identificar problemas sino también imprimirle detalles que pueden llevar a la solución.  Además sus textos son realmente maravillosos, entretenidos y cobran una connotación histórica atrayente.

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Alguna gente está mirando a Colombia como destino para viajar. ¿Qué les aconsejaría?
JCO: If you are thinking of taking a wonderful holiday, this country is right. If you are concerned about safety, I would reply with the famous advertising campaign in the country:”Colombia, the risk is wanting to stay.” Also, if you want to find an exotic location with beautiful beaches where you can rest and relax, a place where nature combines biodiversity with extreme sports, a place where you can find historic sites, world heritage, a place to relax and a living breathing forest with wild animals, a place to find comfort, exclusivity, five star hotels, trendy shops, restaurants with the best international cuisine, then Colombia is the place. Here you can find what you want no matter what your interests, tastes and budget.
Sí está pensando en pasar unas vacaciones maravillosas, este país es el indicado, si le preocupa su seguridad, yo le respondería con la frase insigne de la campaña publicitaría del país: “Colombia, el riesgo es que te quieras quedar”.  Además si usted quiere encontrar un lugar exótico, con playas paradisiacas donde pueda descansar y relajarse; un lugar donde pueda combinar la naturaleza con la biodiversidad y los deportes extremos; un lugar donde pueda encontrar sitios históricos patrimonio de la humanidad; un lugar donde descansar y respirar selva y compartir con animales salvajes; un lugar donde encontrar confort, exclusividad, hoteles cinco estrellas, tiendas de moda, restaurantes con la mejor comida internacional pues Colombia es el lugar indicado.  Acá usted puede encontrar lo que quiera de acuerdo a sus intereses, bolsillo y gustos.

LCO: If you were to move away from Colombia, which food would you miss the most? ¿Si usted se mudara para otro país, que comida crees que más extrañaría?
JCO: My grandmother’s soup. Tropical fruits. empanadas, buñuelos, chips, breakfast porridge. I would miss everything. Each country has its good food and new flavors to try. 
Las sopas de la abuela.  Las frutas tropicales.  Las empanadas, los buñuelos, las hojuelas, la mazamorra.  Todo extrañaría.  Cada país tiene sus hábitos alimenticios y bueno tocaría probar nuevos sabores.

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
JCO: We may not be the most developed country, the most balanced, most peaceful, most trustworthy, the most visited, but behind every image that you think you know is hiding a universe of possibilities where you can see things in a different light. We are willing to share the best of our customs and traditions, we will open the doors of our houses wide open and welcome you as a member of our family. We will always make you feel at home and add a smile to your your step. You will want to stay in this amazing country forever. Your experience will be unforgettable and you’ll never want to return home.
No seremos el país más desarrollado, el más equilibrado, el más pacífico, el más legal, el más visitado, el país añorado, pero detrás de toda esa imagen que usted cree conocer se esconde un universo de seres y posibilidades que vislumbran la vida de otra forma y estarán dispuestos a enseñarle lo mejor de sus costumbres y tradiciones, le abrirán las puertas de su casa de par en par y te acogerán como a un miembro más, porque siempre buscaremos hacerte sentir como en casa y te arrancaremos una sonrisa para que tu paso y estadía por este increíble país sea por siempre inolvidable y nunca te quieras regresar.

Conversations with Colombians: Lina Bossio Acosta

Lina is home in Cartagena where she studies industrial management. Here are her thoughts on Colombia.

Lina es el hogar de Cartagena donde estudia la gestión industrial. Éstos son suspensamientos sobre Colombia.

LCO: Which part of Colombia do you call home? How long have you lived there? ¿Qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa?  ¿Cuánto tiempo has estado viviendo allí?
LBA: I was born in the most beautiful city on the coast in Colombia: Cartagena de Indias, and I’m proud to say I’ve lived here all my life.
Nací en la ciudad más linda de la costa Colombiana: Cartagena de Indias, y me siento orgullosa de decir que aquí he vivido durante toda mi vida.

LCO: What do you do for work? ¿Qué haces en el trabajo?
LBA: Now I’m not working, I do only when the university where I study Industrial Management develops research projects which generally have short lifetimes.
Ahora no estoy trabajando; lo hago solo cuando la universidad donde estudio Administración Industrial, realiza proyectos de investigación que por lo general tienen cortos periodos de duración.

LCO: What is a typical weekend like for you? ¿Cómo es un típico fin de semana para usted?
LBA: Nothing extravagant. Most of my weekends are quiet. I wake up late in the morning (more so if I go party the night before), eat out with friends, watch the sunset at my favorite place in Cartagena: the walls, and especially on Sundays I go to the beach for a bit and read for a change.
Nada extravagantes. La mayoría de mis fines de semana son tranquilos, despertarme muy tarde en la mañana (más aun si he rumbeado la noche anterior), salir a comer con amigos, ver el atardecer en mi lugar favorito en Cartagena: Las murallas y sobre todo los domingos un poco de playa y de lectura para variar.

LCO: What is your big dream? ¿Cuál es tu gran sueño?
LBA: I have a project in mind: I have the idea to travel and explore every corner of Colombia and then continue traveling throughout Latin America.
Se trata de un proyecto que tengo en mente: Tengo la idea de viajar y explorar cada rinconcito de Colombia y después seguir recorriendo toda Latinoamérica.

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian who has inspired you and why. ¿Cuéntenos sobre alguna persona de Colombia quien lo haya inspirado y por qué?
LBA:I have to say that there are two Colombians who have been inspired me. Gabriel García Márquez, Colombian novelist, for his admirable prose and authenticity to combine two concepts as opposites: reality and fiction so intelligently and exceptionally. And the journalist Jaime Garzón, one of the greatest losses of our country and I would say the most memorable of all. His courage and his fight to defend it counts for truth and democracy in Colombia. He was unfortunately foully murdered by the mafia in order to silence his voice.
Dos personajes colombianos me han inspirado. Gabriel García Márquez, reconocido novelista Colombiano, por su admirable prosa y autenticidad al juntar dos conceptos tan opuestos: La realidad y la ficción de manera tan inteligente y excepcional. Y el periodista Jaime Garzón, una de las mayores pérdidas de nuestro país y yo diría que el más memorable de todos, por su valentía y su contante lucha por defender la verdad y la democracia en Colombia y quien desafortunadamente fue vilmente asesinado por las mafias del país para poder callar su voz. 

LCO: If you were to move away from Colombia, which food would you miss the most? ¿Si usted se mudara para otro país, que comida crees que más extrañaría?
LBA: Probably the cheese, because I love cheese in all its presentations and forms. But more than a special meal, what would most miss is the home cooking and seasoning of my mommy.
Probablemente el queso, porque adoro el queso en todas sus presentaciones y formas. Pero más que una comida en especial, lo que más me haría falta seria la comida casera y la sazón de mi mama.

LCO: Tell us about a favorite book or film that is based in Colombia. What is special about it? Háblenos de su libro favorito o una película que se basa en Colombia. ¿Qué tiene de especial?
LBA: There is a film about the ordeal endured by Colombia’s drug mules to the U.S.: Maria Full of Grace. What makes this movie special for me is that it reflects the sad reality of drug trafficking in Colombia but seen through the eyes of those victims of a cruel reality of poverty and despair and which makes them go to extremes unimaginable to so improving their lives and achieve happiness.
Hay una película sobre la odisea que viven las mulas del narcotráfico de Colombia hacia Estados unidos: María Llena de Gracias. Lo que hace especial a esta película para mi es que refleja la triste realidad del narcotráfico en Colombia pero visto desde la mirada de aquellas personas víctimas de una cruel realidad, de pobreza y exclusión y cuyo desespero los hace llegar a extremos inimaginables con tal de mejorar sus vidas y lograr ser felices.

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? ¿Cambiaria alguna cosa sobre Colombia? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
LBA: Absolutely not. If I could change something, I wouldn’t do it because then the country wouldn’t be Colombia anymore.
Absolutamente no, Si pudiera cambiar algo, no lo haría, porque entonces ya ese no sería Colombia.

LCO: Tell us about one of your favourite celebrations in Colombia.  Cuéntanos acerca de una de sus celebraciones favoritas en Colombia.
LBA: My favorite holiday is the Carnival of Barranquilla. If you’ve never been to it, you should. It is one of the most unique celebrations in the world. A party with dancing, music, costumes, but mostly happy and unprejudiced people who are willing to have fun.
Mi celebración favorita es el Carnaval de Barranquilla. Si nunca lo has vivido, deberías. Es una celebración única en el mundo. Una fiesta con danzas, música, disfraces, pero sobre todo con gente alegre y sin prejuicios que está dispuesta a pasarla bien.

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
LBA: Come to my country and get an idea for yourself, although it is inevitable that you  fall in love with his landscapes and people. There is too much to discover, believe me!
Ven a mi país y hazte una idea por ti mismo, aunque es inevitable que te enamores de sus paisajes y gente. Hay mucho por descubrir, créeme!

LCO: Which part of Colombia do you call home? How long have you lived there? ¿Qué parte de Colombia usted le llama casa? ¿Cuánto tiempo has estado viviendo allí?
DMM: Cali is my home, but I’d like to think all of Colombia can be! I’ve lived in Cali for 24 years.
Cali es mi casa, aunque me gusta pensar toda Colombia puede serlo!  He vivido en Cali durante 24 años.

LCO: What do you do for work? ¿Qué haces en el trabajo?
DMM: I work with aquatic insects. I am a biologist – an entomologist. Much of my work experience has been in research projects to characterize aquatic insects in wetlands and some rivers in the Valle department.
Trabajo con insectos acuáticos, soy bióloga – entomóloga, gran parte de mi experiencia laboral ha sido en proyectos de investigación y caracterizando la fauna de insectos acuáticos en los humedales y algunos ríos del Valle.

LCO: In three phrases, what does Colombia mean to you? En tres frases, ¿qué es lo principal para usted de Colombia?
DMM: Diversity, natural wealth and quality of people.
La diversidad, la riqueza natural y la calidad de las personas.

LCO: What is a typical weekend like for you? ¿Cómo es un típico fin de semana para usted?
DMM: My weekends are for rest and to share with my boyfriend, my family and friends. I like leaving home, playing sports, participating in activities with the couch surfing group and some Sundays I go to visit my mom who lives outside of Cali.
Mis fines de semana son de descanso y para compartir con mi novio, mi familia y amigos. Me gusta salir de casa, hago algo de deporte, participo de las actividades con el grupo de CS y algunos domingos voy a visitar a mi mamá quien vive fuera de Cali.

LCO: Would you change anything about Colombia? Why or why not? ¿Cambiaria alguna cosa sobre Colombia? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
DMM: I would change various things, mainly in the social and economic areas so that we could have a better quality of life. Colombia is a rich country full of opportunities but more is invested in the war on drugs than on education, health, housing, etc. There is a lot of corruption in general from those who engage in politics. We are very permissive in terms of crimes that are committed here. I think we should change in this regard. It is something that is much needed so Colombia can be better than it is. I think that denying the problems that we have is the worst thing we can do, but that doesn’t assume we can’t still highlight all the good that is here.
Cambiaria varias cosas, principalmente en el aspecto social y económico, para que pudiéramos tener una mejor calidad de vida. Colombia es un país muy rico y lleno de oportunidades, pero se invierte más en la guerra contra el narcotráfico que en educación, salud, vivienda, etc., hay mucha corrupción, en general nos involucramos poco en la política, somos muy permisivos frente a todos los crímenes que aquí se comenten y deberíamos cambiar nuestra mentalidad en ese sentido,  algo que es muy necesario para que en Colombia podamos estar mejor de lo que actualmente estamos. Me parece que negar los problemas que tenemos es lo peor que podemos hacer y asumirlos no significa que no podamos destacar todo lo bueno que hay y lo bueno que somos.

LCO: Favorite Colombian tradition? ¿Tradición Colombiana Favorita?
DMM: Perhaps the way we celebrate Christmas and New Year. The atmosphere changes completely and it feels full of joy and fellowship. It’s a very emotional time, full of rich food, parties, gifts, lights. Also, in Cali, celebrating this time with the Fair!
Tal vez la forma como celebramos la navidad y el año nuevo, el ambiente cambia por completo  y se siente mucho más la alegría y la confraternidad. Es una época muy emotiva, llena de comidas ricas, fiestas, regalos, luces.  Además que en Cali celebramos esa época con la Feria!!

LCO: Tell us about one Colombian who has inspired you and why. ¿Cuéntenos sobre alguna persona de Colombia quien lo haya inspirado y por qué?
DMM: In Colombia, there are many people who inspire me – ordinary people who struggle every day to cope with family life, who help others despite their own difficulties, many mothers who are heads of the household, who are very smart and bold. And the many people who know how to be happy regardless of their situation.
En Colombia hay muchas personas que inspiran, personas del común que luchan dia a dia por salir adelante junto con su familia, que ayudan a otros a pesar de las dificultades, muchas madres cabezas de hogar que son unas berracas,  personas muy inteligentes y destacadas y muchas personas que saben ser felices a pesar de todo.

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Alguna gente está mirando a Colombia como destino para viajar. ¿Qué les aconsejaría?
DMM: In Colombia, there are destinations and plans to suit all tastes. There is a lot of variety to enjoy, not only in major cities, but there are many villages and remote sites to discover. They also say that despite the problems we have and the precautions to be taken, Colombia is not as dangerous as people think in other countries. We are more polite and cordial than they could imagine.
Que dispongan una buena cantidad de tiempo para disfrutar de toda su variedad, en Colombia hay destinos y  planes para todos los gustos. No solo en las ciudades principales, también hay muchos pueblos y sitios alejados por descubrir. También les diría que a pesar de los problemas que tenemos y de las precauciones necesarias que se deben tomar, Colombia no es tan peligroso como se cree en otros países, somos más amables y cordiales de lo que podrían  imaginar.

LCO: If you were to move away from Colombia, which food would you miss the most? ¿Si usted se mudara para otro país, que comida crees que más extrañaría?
DMM: I would miss the peaches, the green mangos, the lulo and many other fruits, toast, banana empanadas, el champús (a drink), bandeja paisa and chicken stew, typical sweets and I imagine many other things because I love the food of my country.
Extrañaría el chontaduro, el mango biche, el lulo y muchas otras frutas, las tostadas de plátano, las empanadas, el champús,  la bandeja paisa y el sancocho de gallina, los dulces típicos y me imagino que muchas otras cosas más porque me encanta la comida de mi país.

LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
DMM: Colombia is a beautiful country full of contrasts and breathtaking landscapes. It’s exotic. We are fortunate to have two oceans, mountains, snow, desert, plains, jungle and a high level of biodiversity. Plus, Colombians are very warm and caring people.
Que Colombia es un país hermoso, de contrastes, lleno de paisajes maravillosos, exóticos, que tenemos la fortuna de tener los dos océanos, montañas, nieve, desierto, llano, selva, somos altamente biodiversos y que los colombianos somos personas muy cálidas y afectuosas.
