Roberto is a fashion photographer. Originally from Bogota, he now lives with his family in London. He’s agreed to let me share some of his photographs of Colombian women in this interview. For more of his work, see his website.

LCO: Give us some background info first: Which part of Colombia are you from originally, how long ago did you leave and where do you live now? Danos algo de información de fondo en primer lugar: ¿Qué parte de Colombia es usted originalmente, cuánto tiempo hace que te fuiste y donde vives ahora?
RM: Born and raised in Bogota, the capital of Colombia, I left Colombia in November 2009 and came to London to live with my wife.
Naci y crecí en Bogotá, la capital de Colombia, salí del país en noviembre de 2009 y llegue a Londres para vivir con mi esposa.
LCO: What is the Colombian culture scene like in London? Do you think it meets the needs of Colombian expats living abroad? ¿Cuál es la escena de la cultura colombiana en Londres? ¿Crees que satisface las necesidades de los expatriados colombianos residentes en el extranjero?
RM: From my point of view, there’s no Colombian cultural scene here in London. Of course you can find places where you can find stores, markets, restaurants, lot of things, but never a cultural Colombian scene. It’s not exactly the kind of thing that you can feel like it’s home. Although, there is one festival (www.colombiage.com) you might find it interesting to check out.
Desde mi punto de vista, no hay una escena de la cultura Colombiana en Londres. Por supuesto usted puede encontrar lugares como tiendas, mercados, restaurantes y muchas cosas pero nunca una escena de la cultura Colombiana. LCO: What do you miss most about Colombia? Que es lo que más extraña de Colombia?
RM: My sisters, the food – especially the food from the coast – and well, I feel “safe” there.
Mis hermanas, la comida especialmente la de la costa y bueno me siento seguro en Colombia.
LCO: In three sentences, what does Colombia mean to you? En tres frases, ¿qué es lo principal para usted de Colombia?
RM: As you know I’m not a great writer, and some people might found it cliché or not the best advertising, but check these videos:

LCO: More people are looking at Colombia as a travel destination. What advice do you have for them? Alguna gente está mirando a Colombia como destino para viajar. ¿Qué les aconsejaría?
RM: ENJOY!!!! Play safe and don’t do stupid things that you wouldn’t do at your home.
Disfrutar!!!! Ir a lo seguro y no hacer cosas estúpidas que no arias en su casa.
LCO: It is said that Colombia has some of the most beautiful women in the world. As an erotic and fashion photographer, what do you have to say about that? Se dice que Colombia tiene algunas de las mujeres más hermosas del mundo. Como fotógrafo erótico y moda, ¿Que tendría que decir usted sobre esto?
RM: My wife is Colombian, isn’t she?? I’m aware that Colombia has a well-deserved fame with our women, but trust me it depends on the eye of the spectator.
Mi esposa es de Colombia ¿no es cierto? Soy consciente que Colombia tiene una buena merecida fama con nuestras mujeres, pero yo creer que más bien depende de los ojos de los espectadores.
LCO: What is your earliest memory of Colombia? ¿Qué es el más temprano que recuerdes de Colombia?
RM: I was born there, so my earliest memory is in my childhood playing dodgeball, hide and seek, cops and robbers, or on the roof as a fighter pilot…
Naci allí, por tanto lo más temprano que recuerde es mi niñez jugando balón prisionero, a las escondidas, policías y ladrones o encima del techo como un piloto de combate.
LCO: Favorite Colombian food? ¿Favorita comida Colombiana?
RM: As I told you before, it’s the food from the coast, but if you want to know a great dish, it would be “Posta Negra Cartagenera” with coconut rice and Colombian prawns, ceviche as a starter. Oh, and I miss the cheese. (Ok, it might sound silly as it’s supposed to be that Europe has the best cheese, I know, but I like Colombian campesino cheese.)
Como te conté antes, la comida de la costa, pero si usted quiere saber de un estupendo platillo, este podría ser “Posta Negra Cartagenera” con arroz de coco y langostinos Colombianos, como entrada ceviche. Ha, y extraño el queso (ok, esto quizás suene como tonto pero se supone que el mejor queso es el de Europa, yo sé, pero me gusta el queso campesino).
LCO: Would you move back to Colombia in the future? Why or why not? ¿Regresarías a Colombia en un futuro? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
RM: I’m not so sure to raise my kids in a foreign country, but to start over again and again, here and there… hm, it’s a tough decision, but sooner rather than later we have to pick.
No estoy seguro de criar mis hijos en un país extranjero, pero empezar de nuevo una y otra vez aquí y allí… hm esto es una difícil decisión, pero antes que tarde tenemos que decidir.
LCO: If you could tell the rest of the world something about your country, what would you say? ¿Si usted pudiera contarle al resto del mundo alguna cosa sobre su país, que le gustaría comentar?
RM: Buy a ticket, go there and enjoy the most wonderful country. And bring me some bocadillos!
Compre un tiquete, viaje para Colombia y disfrute del más maravilloso país, y tráigame algunos bocadillos!
